Blikkies Band – Net vir Pret!

Snapped today at the SwellenMark: the Barrydale Blikkiesband aka Net vir Pret, performing their quite complicated rhythms & choreographed steps. It is impossible not to tap your feet to the beat.

Net Vir Pret was founded by South African author Anne Harries and Peter Takelo, a child development professional in Barrydale, Western Cape, South Africa. It aims to facilitate after-school and holiday programme activities targeting farm schools on either side of the Route62 in the Barrydale farming locale, including young people from the two local village schools.

The organisation works with approximately 350-500 children during its holiday programmes. Net Vir Pret has also been accredited to run Diversion Programmes for children sentenced by the SA Courts.
“Net vir Pret aims to work with children and young people from deprived communities in the Barrydale/Overberg ( Swellendam Municipal) Area. Furthermore Net vir Pret aims to encourage self-esteem, confidence and a sense of responsibility among these children by providing activities which will help break the cycle of poverty, domestic violence and alcoholism/drug misuse within the family and community.” – Peter Takelo 2010

Net Vir Pret runs craft workshops, art classes, paired reading programmes and facilitates creative spaces which include music – drumming and the popularisation of traditional, indigenous dance such as the Rieldans, an alternative sports programme and a much used Toy Library.
