Inner City Drinking. No problem.

At the yearly Cape Country Routes AGM we were introduced to Jean Vincent Ridon and his wonderful wines, vision and mission.  In the middle of the Cape Town CBD you will find this, the only urban winery in South Africa. Signal Hill Winery is also the most traditional winery, making wine only a few hundred metres from where the first grapes where ever pressed in South Africa, on the 2nd of February 1659… they are part of so much history and now also really help to shape the future of the South African wine industry!

Signal Hill Winery is becoming famous worldwide for its range of experimental wines, and for pioneering unusual varietals, new styles or the revival of lost jewels… Check the list of their wines and explore their philosophy: Vive la Difference. Created in 1997 by Jean Vincent Ridon, Signal Hill Winery was one of the first boutique wineries in South Africa, at a time of transition, when the world of wine and the South African wine industry rediscovered that small is beautiful..

Located in the heart of Cape Town, on the tip of the African Continent, it is the only city winery in the middle of a capital in the world. The choice of the city center to set up a winery is an old European tradition, where from Beaune to Riquewihr, the wineries are in the city… This was also the case in Cape Town during the 19th century when many wineries where located in the city centre.

It is important to note that the city bowl of Cape Town is the historic center of the South African wine industry as the first wine was produced in the Castle, in 1659, from grapes grown in the Companie’s Gardens. Grapes were only planted in Constantia and Stellenbosch much later.

Speak to us about visiting the winery when you are in Cape Town, Jean Vincent would be only too happy to share his extensive knowledge and really quite extraordinary product with you.
