Esona – The VERY One

Let us introduce you to the hand written story of Esona (Xhosa for “The very One”). ..

Esona is a boutique winery, producing limited release wine from single vineyards nestled beside the Breede River in the Robertson Wine Valley. Husband Rowan, and wife Caryl, found this 17 hectare farm situated between Robertson and Bonnievale as a place of relaxation from the busy city life. As all great things take time they developed this once before vegetable farm into nine hectares of vines in 2004 and bottled and released the first Esona wine in 2010. The farm is maintained by a small team that knows every vine through their hand-picking of the grapes.

The wine is crafted to capture the unique tastes of Esona’s grapes that nature has provided. Esona wine labels each have a unique tear on the top edge making each bottle distinct. With many exciting plans for the future, the team is currently re-constructing the Old Cellar into a tasting venue with an underground cellar, ground floor wine tasting and upstairs deli with a small but enticing menu that focuses on supporting local products and food and wine pairing.  It will also have a large veranda surrounded by vineyards and overlooking the Breede River.

Our good friend Neil Pendock recently rated Esona Shiraz as a five-heart wine. Out of 2000+ blind tastes done Esona Shiraz is one of only 16 Shiraz wines to be given this 5 star rating! Only 147 wines made his list and Esona stands proudly amongst the 16 other Robertson Wine Valley wines for this wonderful achievement. As Neil writes: “…the big winners of the week are obscure wine brands like Esona, Mimosa, Arendsig and Windfall to pick four Robertson rock stars at random.”
