Chris and Andrea Mullineux at their cellar

Mail & Guardian has just released its Top 20  Wineries List and the Mullineux Family have made it to Nr 10. ' 10 Mullineux Family Wines: Another Swartland winery leapfrogs into a high ranking. It is a new entry and it is rare to arrive on the South African scene with the impressive force shown by the fledgling winery of Chris and Andrea Mullineux, whose first bottled vintage was only in 2008. The elegant Syrah, rich White Blend and sweet Straw Wine have deservedly shared the honours — and what honors!' This is an unbelievable achievement as Chris and Andrea have only been active for a few short...

JosephBarry

We discovered this little gem a few days ago, an answer to our prayers if you will, because just last week I made a mental note that we need to get grappa urgently as my last drop of Dalla Cia Grappa was finally had. For the love of Chocolate

Nontwenhle_Ezulwini

Honest Chocolate have opened on Wale Street, No 66 to be exact. Same side as the Taj, and up the hill. Michael De Klerk and Anthony Gird are the two guys behind Honest Chocolate. This is the most delicious chocolate you could taste. Intense flavours, without the cloying sweetness and fat that you get in many handmade chocolates characterise their products. Why are they so different? First of all they use unroasted organic raw cocoa beans in making their chocolates. So what is so good about that?  Well according to the guys, this means that the good nutrients and enzymes in the cocoa are not destroyed. ...

All in a day’s Carnival

Lunch with Sandra Prinsloo (right), Judi Rebstein & Mandy Marshall

This year's Canola Carnival is the biggest yet and one has to marvel at the sense of joy and obvious effort which has gone into the event. By no means a large festival, the Canola Carnival is extremely efficiently run and a beacon of optimism and 'can do'. This year the focus shows a clear shift from the doof-doof dumb stuff to outdoor and activity events. The Mountain Bike route got a lot of attention as did the 2 Marathons. Perhaps the best of all was the Extreme 4x4. The WCCC (Western Cape Challenge Club) is a member of Motorsport South Africa which organizes and hosts the 4×4 Extreme...

A TripAdvisor Review

Swellendam winter by Bruce Geils

Not your normal blog entry today, but this is such a great review by two recent guests to Augusta de Mist. The review just appeared on TripAdvisor and was unsolicited by us in any way. This is long overdue, but I hope that you get a chance to go during winter. Only a few hours from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town. Sits a small farming town that was once its own state it is named Swellendam and hosts one the nicest boutique retreats in the Western Cape. My partner and I found this little treasure in the British Airways in-flight magazine. We had been through this town on our way to various...

LadiSmith. Liquid Gold.

LadiSmith-01-R1

The Concours Mondiale de Bruxelles is normally the winning ground for the big guns from Van Ryn’s, Klipdrift and Distell. This year LadiSmith 8 year Vintage Potstill Brandy surprised the veterans at this years competition by winning gold.In sporting terms, that would be like a South African winning Wimbledon. That’s not to take away from this fine result, LadiSmith, from Southern Cape Vineyards, is a worthy winner and all involved should be justly proud of this achievement. South African’s know a thing or two about making brandy, having won the title for Best Brandy in the World...
